Prof. dr. Myriam Diocaretz (1951, Concepción, Chili) studeerde van 1969 tot 1975 Engelse taal- en letterkunde, alsmede Engelse en Amerikaanse cultuurwetenschappen aan de Universiteit van Concepción in Chili. Daarna volgde zij aan de Stanford Universiteit in Stanford, Californië, een jaar Engelse en Amerikaanse en kritische studies (Fulbright Fellowship). Van 1979 tot 1980 studeerde zij aan de Universiteit van Californië in Irvine, Californië, kritische theorie, filosofie en Europese cultuurkritiek. Van 1980 tot 1982 was zij verbonden aan State University van New York in Stony-Brook, New York, waar zij vergelijkende Anglo-Amerikaanse en Europese cultuurwetenschappen studeerde. Hier promoveerde zij ook, in de filosofie, op het proefschrift Reading and Writing in the Act of Translation (Ann Arbor, UMI, 1983). In de jaren 1990 volgde zij tal van cursussen op het gebied van ICT.
Prof. Diocaretz begon haar loopbaan als medewerker en docent in de Engelse Faculteit van de Universiteit van Concepción (1972-1979), van de Universiteit van Californië (Irvine, Californië) (1979) en van de State University van New York (Stony-Brook, New York) (1980-1982). Van 1983 tot 1989 was zij als post-doc verbonden aan de Faculteit der Letteren van de Universiteit Utrecht, en wel voor de organisatie en coördinatie van de jaarlijkse internationale Utrechtse zomerschool over kritische semiotiek. Daarna was prof. Diocaretz drie jaar verbonden aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam op het gebied van tekstwetenschappen, onder andere als onafhankelijk uitgever van wetenschappelijke tijdschriften op dit vakgebied. In 1993 vestigde zij zich als zelfstandig consultant in Amsterdam, op het terrein van internationale wetenschappelijke publicaties. Van 1997 tot 2001 werkte zij voor twee bedrijven als coördinator van trainingen aan specialisten op ICT-gebied.
Sinds 2001 is prof. Diocaretz als senior onderzoeker verbonden aan het European Centre for Digital Communication in Heerlen op het gebied van de digitalisering van de samenleving. Tevens is zij sinds 2004 als onafhankelijk expert op het terrein van de informatie-maatschappij werkzaam bij de Europese Commissie in Brussel. Zij verzorgde in haar carrière voordrachten over de hele wereld. In 1989 richtte zij het wetenschappelijke tijdschrift Critical Studies op, waarvan zij nog steeds hoofdredacteur is. Haar meest recente publicatie is The Matrix in Theory, critical essays (red., samen met S. Herbrechter, Rodopi, Amsterdam enz., 2006).
Deze bijzondere leerstoel was tot 1-1-2009 gevestigd bij de Universiteit van Maastricht en werd tussen 1-10-2007 en 1-1-2009 bezet door prof. dr. M. Diocaretz.
Myriam Diocaretz:
‘During the period of the appointment of the Socrates Chair in Tilburg the general aim will be to develop conceptual and cross-disciplinary social, philosophical and scientific links between humanism and technology in the 21st century. Parallel to this, I will formulate a systematic critical approach concerning the current and forthcoming technological developments aimed at societal applications, in which humans are being constructed as the “end-user” or “consumer”. In a globalising world, the industry and the economic factor tend to predominate; therefore, including the humanistic dimensions and the impact of technology into society becomes indispensable.’
